Marana

Prime ranching and farm land for centuries

History

Marana is the main trade center for the surrounding rural area of approximately 500 square miles. Located at the juncture of Brawley Wash and the Santa Cruz River, the town was established in 1881 with the arrival of the railroad. The Spanish started the first cattle ranches here in 1700. The area was overgrown with dense mesquite thickets and the name Marana comes from the Spanish word meaning"impassable tangle"or"jungle."Today, Marana combines a peaceful country setting with bustling commercial expansion, and is especially attractive to young families.

Business & Industry

Several years ago, Marana was known for cotton, wheat and lettuce fields. Although agriculture remains a major force in the town's economy, the recent boom in population growth and new construction is attracting industries to this business-friendly area. Situated near Interstate 10, the railroad, and a regional airport, Marana is in an ideal location for relocating and starting new businesses.
